New York mini-guide

lt only happens here

Walking along the sidewalks in New York makes you feel like the star of a film: almost like being on the set of a film that has no final scene.  The frenetic atmosphere in the Big Apple doesn’t fade with the passage of time: days and nights are filled with strong emotions which eradicate any desire to sleep even in the laziest of persons and are perfect company for insomniacs. This brave city challenges the forces of gravity by frenetically building skyscrapers that reach ever higher and reflect the sky which can rapidly change from sun to rain or snow owing to the strong Atlantic stream. Everyone knows that almost anything can happen in New York: even taking the subway and finding yourself next to passengers wearing only underwear.

If it is true that New York is the pace setter for fashion and trends, then attention should be focused on an increasingly popular, new phenomenon: double master bedrooms. Thus, land of freedom lays claim to independence of the couple even within the family home: indeed, when purchasing new homes, Americans demand separate bedrooms. It has been estimated that by 2015, 60% of the custom built homes in the States will be built in this manner which, according to sociologists, makes for a good night’s sleep and peaceful re-awakenings.

In New York, there’s always an original solution for any problem, such as, for example, the high temperatures in July and August. Last year, the trend for “artistic happenings” on building roof tops. The idea was to create a social network for inhabitants of the same condominium and nearby skyscrapers which would allow people to meet, under the starry sky, and admire the works of young artists or enjoy film projections, live shows and performances.

At least once in their lives, everyone should toast in the new year in the square which, since the early twentieth century has been the official site for American New Year’s celebrations: welcome to Times Square. Once known as Long Acre Square and merely an intersection of two large avenues of traffic: Seventh Avenue and Broadway. The square has become the central propelling force of New York life since 1904, when the New York Times  moved it offices here in the Times Tower, an elegant building inspired by the Giotto’s bell tower in Florence. A large party was organised in the square for the occasion, and the square was renamed Times Square. Not to be missed is a walk along luxurious Fifth Avenue which, since 1883, has become a veritable symbol of wealth: William Henry Vanderbilt built his splendid palazzo and thus initiated the fashion of residential areas around Central Park. An original landmark of the time is the celebrated Cartier’s at 651 Fifth Avenue… but only go after having had “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” on 57th Street.
