In Hamburg, the season opens with great festivals and musicals Every year, over one million persons take part in the Hamburg Harbour Festival and admire large war ships, submarines, old boats and caravels, Egyptian galleys and Viking drakkar longships up close. During the Hafengeburtstag, that is the Harbour Birthday Festival, the German city celebrates the day, 7 May 1189, Emperor Fredrick Barbarossa granted toll exemptions for ships sailing along the Elbe from the city to the North Sea.  There’s no end to the celebrations in Hamburg: The DOM, the most popular fun fair in Northern Germany is held three times a year in Spring (from 23 March to 22 April), Summer (from 27 July to 26 august) and Winter (from 9 November to 9 December). Held at the Heiligengeistfeld Fairground, the DOM features thousands of food stands, a variety of rides and lots of entertainment and attractions. From the streets to the stage, fun in the lively city of Hamburg never stops: the calendar of events for the next months includes a number of successful musicals. The curtains at the prestigious Operettenhaus will continue to rise over the scenes of Mamma mia, a musical, based on the songs of Abba by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus. The plot centres around an amusing story of love and friendship. Aficionados of musicals can also see Dirty Dancing, produced by Staged Entertainment, at the Hamburg Neue Flora Theatre. This is the theatrical adaptation of the successful 1997 film by Eleanor Bergestein starring Patrick Swayze. With a variety of festivals, dance and music, Hamburg is waiting to surprise you with its atmosphere permeated with Romanticism.
