Exhibit: Flight in Comics" (4 March - 4 June 2005)
In collaboration with COMICON, the International Comics and Animation Festival was held at Castel S. Elmo in Naples from 4 to 6 March 2005.
The allure of air travel and its significance, even in metaphorical terms, have always inspired script writers, designers and other authors of the so-called "ninth art" such as aeronautical enthusiasts or creators of battle stories who have made air travel a visual point of reference, so much so as to create what might almost be termed as a sub-genre of adventure comics: "aviation comics"
Homage is rendered to those great names in international comics as well as to the fantastic characters who have accompanied entire generations of readers as they grew up. These comics frequently focused on air travel (Mickey mouse, Snoopy, etc.) by offering a personal re-interpretation of some of the best strips: Francois Walthéry's Natascha; Walt Disney's Mickey Mouse and the mystery of the cloud man; Milo Manara's A trip to Tulum; Dave Stevens' Rocketeer; Attilio Micheluzzi's Petra Cherie; Charles M. Schultz's – Snoopy and Peanuts; J. M. Charlier's Jijé - Tenenet Doppio Bang and Andrea Pazienza's Aficionados.

On the path to a dream …the island of Ischia as viewed by photographer Oscar Pantalone
An exhibit entitled "On the path to a dream …" by the young photographer Oscar Pantalone will be held in the recently refurbished first floor waiting room, adjacent to the new security control units. In his photos, Ischia appears enchanted, almost dream-like and offers a series of emotions tied to various scenarios of the Green Island. The photos depict very evocative landscapes and glimpses of Ischia, especially the town of Forio where Oscar Pantalone lives and works. The photos are accompanied by quotations from the works of celebrated writers who have visited Ischia, including Truman Capote and W.H. Auden, which serve as captions to the lovely images.
Gesac - the Naples airport management company - intends to use the airport site as an unusual venue for hosting exhibits and cultural events in a mixture of art / culture and the airport through the promotion of initiatives tied to art and a more enhanced integration of the airport with the city's most important cultural events.
The area, which has been expanded and renovated thanks to the current infrastructure works initiated 5 years ago in November of 2003 and aimed at reconfiguring the entire passenger terminal, has been designed to provide a pleasant, interesting moment of relaxation for passengers and their family and friends during waiting times at Naples airport.
"When you return home after having travelled to distant lands, you become aware of the energy that is released in certain areas of your own country. The colours are vibrant and these areas come to life as you lose perception of the passage of time and the bustle of daily life. Thus, through photography, reality becomes an exercise of fantasy and an expression of pure emotion. Therefore, this exhibit is aimed at expressing ideal beauty through images of scenarios offered by real landscapes and architecture as well as by nature, without any artifice other than the choice of what to include in the photo and the time of day in which it is taken". (Oscar Pantalone)
Biography of Oscar Pantalone
This young, well established photographer from Ischia was born in Como in 1976 and lives on the island where he is a professional photographer producing quality images for high end publications in the tourism sector. A gifted portrait artist, in 2004 he published "Il volto di Ischia" (The face of Ischia) for Officina Ischiatana Delle Arti Grafiche publishers, a collection of black and white photos of the people of his land. His work has been shown in five personal exhibits on the island: "Gli altri dell'isola" - The others of the island - held at Villa Arbusto, Antiche Terme Belliazzi, the Geophysical Observatory in 2003 which focused on immigration in Ischia; "Calace" which documented the production of plectrum instruments in the workshops of celebrated lute makers held at the Antoniana Library in 2004; "8 Bar solo", a collection of black and white portraits of well-known and not-so-well-known musicians dedicated to the world of jazz at the Antonveneta Bank in 2005; "Paris" a series of images of contemporary Paris at the Spazio Arte La Colombaia in 2006; and, "the Ravino Gardens as viewed by Oscar Pantalone"- an exhibit of naturalistic, macro images held at the Ravino Gardens in 2007.
